Olive Close Residence Constantia

Constantia, Cape Town, South Africa
This residence, for a growing family, responded to the client brief, requesting a large residence suited to their evolving living requirements. The site, adjacent to the historic Groot Constantia homestead, has wonderful views over the undulating vineyards towards Constantia Nek and Table Mountain. As the views are of paramount importance, it was decided to demolish the existing residence and to build a new home, with a raised ground level in order to maximize these panoramic vistas. Special consideration was given to ensure a functional connection of the building with its garden setting – wide landscaped steps, planted embankments and other landscaping devices were employed to connect the garden and site with its elevated position. The form of the building can clearly be seen as two distinct elements connected by means of a double volume entrance lobby and atrium space: public and entertainment spaces are accommodated within a double storey structure with sculptural, staggered mono-pitched roofs whilst the bedroom wing is a flat concrete roofed structure of a more domestic scale, stepped in plan to afford all rooms with equally good views over the gardens and vineyards beyond. Off-shutter concrete walls, carefully detailed joinery components and restrained interior finishes resulted in contemporary yet family friendly interior spaces.
